BYD Launches Third EV Model in Japan

China’s BYD has launched its third electric vehicle (EV) in Japan, introducing the Seal EV sedan as its most expensive model so far in a market where consumers have long favored domestic brands.

Pricing and Specifications

The Shenzhen-based automaker has started taking orders for the Seal EV in Japan. The suggested retail price for the rear-wheel-drive version is set at 5.28 million yen ($33,111.75). In China, the model starts from 179,800 yuan ($24,759.70). The Seal EV will be available in two versions: a rear-wheel-drive and an all-wheel-drive version, both equipped with an 82.56 kilowatt-hour battery pack. The rear-wheel-drive version boasts a cruising range of 640 km (398 miles), while the 6.05 million yen all-wheel-drive version can travel 575 km on a single charge.

Market Impact

The expansion of BYD in Japan could become a concern for domestic automakers, which are struggling in China against BYD and other Chinese EV brands. BYD’s entry into the Japanese market with high-end EV models highlights the competitive landscape of the automotive industry in the region.

Previous Launches

Last year, BYD launched the Atto 3 and Dolphin EVs in Japan, selling about 2,500 units. The company has consistently rolled out battery-powered cars for the Japanese market, excluding other powertrain technologies such as plug-in hybrids, in which it remains a significant player in China.
