Severe Flooding Forces MidAmerican Energy to Shut Off Services in Rock Valley
MidAmerican Energy’s Response to Flooding
Due to quickly approaching flooding, MidAmerican Energy has disconnected electric power to four customers in the Rock Valley and natural gas supply to around ninety other customers.
This measure is part of the company’s emergency response to ensure safety as the National Weather Service predicts “major severity flooding” this weekend, with heavy rain forecast tonight.
The decision to shut off services is based on National Weather Service historical flood data and river crest predictions, ensuring proactive measures for customer safety.
Customer Notification and Safety Measures
Affected gas customers have been notified through automated calls. MidAmerican will also attempt to contact additional customers who might face an emergency gas or electric service shutoff before determining if flooding conditions at their location necessitate this action. Service technicians will remain in affected areas around the clock to protect everyone’s safety.
Gas Service Shutoff Procedures
If gas service is turned off, an employee will lock the meter to prevent unsafe attempts at restoring service. This precaution is crucial to avoid potential hazards associated with gas leaks or other related risks during flooding conditions.
Electric Service Shutoff Procedures
If electric service is turned off, MidAmerican recommends that customers switch off circuit breakers, unplug and move appliances to a higher floor, and avoid standing water to prevent electrocution or other safety risks.
Before MidAmerican can safely restore service, a client whose electrical wire has come into contact with water must have a licenced electrician assess the area. MidAmerican will notify customers once it is safe to begin restoring service.
